Space weather update: massive sunspot region now facing Earth, primed to hurl out solar flares

noaa

NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center (SPWC) is watching the sunspot region closely.

SPWC is forecasting a high likelihood of moderate to strong flares in the next few days. It calls for a 75 percent of M-class flares and 20 percent chance of X-class flares through May 13.

NOAA Region 1476, now right in the middle of the solar disk, continues to dissipate its energy in relatively small bursts of modest flares and weak CMEs. That output belies its appearance — large sunspots and entangled magnetic fields. Forecasters are vigilant.

Agent Orange Corn?

Agent orange corn

The product, officially called 'Enlist,' is a genetically modified crop able to withstand being sprayed with 2,4-D, one of the components of Agent Orange, so that farmers can spray the pesticide to kill weeds without killing the crop.

A new kind of genetically modified crop under the brand name of “Enlist” — known by its critics as “Agent Orange corn” has opponents pushing U.S. regulators to scrutinize the product more closely and reject an application by Dow AgroSciences to roll out its herbicide-resistant seeds.

The “Enlist” corn has been genetically engineered to be immune to 2,4-D, an ingredient used in Agent Orange that some say could pose a serious threat to the environment and to human health. Approval by the United States Department of Agriculture and Environmental Protection Agency would allow farmers to spray it far and wide without damaging their crops, boosting profits for the agribusiness giant.

‘Monster sunspot’ may foretell powerful solar flares, says NASA

sunspot spanning more than 60,000 miles

A huge sunspot spanning more than 60,000 miles could erupt, sending high energy radiation into space.

An enormous sunspot group has taken shape on the surface of the sun, hinting that our star may soon start spouting off some powerful storms.

The huge sunspot complex, known as AR 1476, rotated into Earth’s view over the weekend. It measures more than 60,000 miles (100,000 kilometers) across, researchers said. Scientists with NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory mission, a space-based telescope watching the sun, dubbed the solar structure a “monster sunspot.”

Sunspots are temporary dark patches on the surface of the sun that are caused by intense magnetic activity. These structures sometimes erupt into solar flares, which send high-energy radiation streaming into space.

The Top Short-Term Threat to Humanity: The Fuel Pools of Fukushima

Senator-Fukushima-Fuel-Pool-Is-a-National-Security-Issue-for-AMERICA

The storage pool in the No. 4 reactor building has a total of 1,535 fuel rods, or 460 tons of nuclear fuel, in it. The 7-story building itself has suffered great damage, with the storage pool barely intact on the building’s third and fourth floors.

An international coalition of nuclear scientists and non-profit groups are calling on the U.N. to coordinate a multi-national effort to stabilize the fuel pools of Fukushima.

After visiting Fukushima, Senator Ron Wyden warned that the situation was worse than reported; Many nuclear scientists and non-profit groups continue to urge Japan to accept international help to stabilize the dangerous spent fuel pools.

The structural integrity of the damaged Unit 4 reactor building has long been a major concern among experts because a collapse of its spent fuel cooling pool could cause a disaster worse than the three reactor meltdowns. There is more cesium in Unit 4 fuel pool than in all 800 nuclear bombs ever exploded above ground globally.

Fuel pool number 4 is indeed, the top short-term threat facing humanity according to these reports.

Report warns of weather satellites’ ‘rapid decline’

Decline of weather satilites

The number of instruments monitoring Earth's activity is expected to decline from a peak of about 110 last year to fewer than 30 by the end of the decade.

Predicting the weather is tricky enough. Now a new government-sponsored report warns that the USA’s ability to track tornadoes, forecast hurricanes and study climate change is about to diminish.

The number and capability of weather satellites circling the planet “is beginning a rapid decline” and tight budgets have significantly delayed or eliminated missions to replace them, says a National Research Council analysis out Wednesday.

The number of in-orbit and planned Earth observation missions by NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is projected to drop “precipitously” from 23 this year to only six by 2020, the report found.

One in seven thinks end of world is coming

TEOTWAWKI

One in seven thinks end of world is coming.

Nearly 15 percent of people worldwide believe the world will end during their lifetime and 10 percent think the Mayan calendar could signify it will happen in 2012, according to a new poll.

The end of the Mayan calendar, which spans about 5,125 years, on December 21, 2012 has sparked interpretations and suggestions that it marks the end of the world.

“Whether they think it will come to an end through the hands of God, or a natural disaster or a political event, whatever the reason, one in seven thinks the end of the world is coming,”

CDC: Helmets during tornadoes might help

Tornado helmet

The CDC emphasizes that a helmet is no substitution for finding shelter; but may help your odds of survival in the event of a tornado.

During a tornado, the most common cause of death is a head injury. Could a helmet possibly help?

Researchers at the University of Alabama at Birmingham say it can. When a tornado ripped through Alabama on April 27, 2011, at least 11 of the 21 fatalities resulted from head and neck injuries. That led researchers to recommended in a January 2012 commentary, “the use of any helmet, or head covering made of a hard material and worn to protect the head from injury, stored in an easily and readily accessible location in the home, workplace or vehicle for which one of its purposes is to be worn in the event of or threat of tornadic activity.”
